From Barny's Desk
Without health life is not life.
There is the type of education we get in school and there are life lessons we learn
along the way. Both are important.
Awareness is a life lesson which is also the most important technique we learn in
self-defense. Awareness is the first step in preventing danger - you cannot avoid
danger if you are not aware of it.
Most young people have the attitude that they are invincible and with some,
including myself that carries on to middle age. We live each day to the fullest
and make our life choices based on our gut and our desires. We figure out
that life moves us in directions that the wisdom we hope to have gained is
sometimes late in coming.
The life lesson I learned this year is that everyone needs to listen to what their
body is trying to tell them. I also learned that we need to get a check up every
year or two and listen to what the experts tell us as well. Recently I found out
that I have a problem that has taken me away from what I really love which
is teaching. This is a short term problem that can be cured with treatment in a
matter of months.I am very happy about that but not being able to do what you
love makes those few monthsseem like an eternity.
I want to pass on what I have learned and that is staying healthy does not mean
just working out regularly and watching your diet, you must also let the doctor
check you out once in awhile just to make sure. The same holds true when you are
out if you are oblivious to everyone around you until something happens it may be
too late.

Fitness Fundamentals
There are very few things that can take your training to the next level like eating
right,
getting a good night's sleep and working hard. If you find that you have stalled
somewhere in
your training, be it in CrossFit, Conditioning, Strength training, or even keeping
up in your
Krav class, take a moment to review some fundamentals.
First things first, you need to have a solid nutrition base. Whether you eat Paleo,
Vegetarian, Zone
Diet, Raw, whatever, you need to make sure you are getting adequate levels of Protein,
Carbohydrates and Fat to support your workload. An excess or deficiency in any
of these three
'macronutrients' can bog you down and sap your energy or inhibit your recovery
from a hard
workout. As a general rule of thumb, CrossFit reccomends that you "Eat meat and
vegetables,
nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar. Keep intake to levels that
will support exercise
but not body fat." Make sure your meals include a chunk of protein and veggies
with a little starch
to round it out. Be sure to include good fats like Olive oil, nuts and nut butters
or avocado and
even animal fat in moderation.
Sleep is another major key to success in all sports and athletics. I know how
hard it is to find time
to get sleep in the modern world but it is up to you to carve out the time to get
a good night's sleep if
you plan on working a full day and then training at the gym for a few hours. Sleep
is when the body
gets a chance to repair and rebuild itself after the abuse you just put it through.
Log off facebook
and get your Z's.
Lastly, work hard! Nothing, I mean nothing, no supplement, no pill, no self help
book, no guru,
no regimen will take you to the next level like hard work. It is an inescapable
truth. Go get it
like you mean it. Those squats aren't going to get lighter. You are going to have
to get stronger!
There are a million other little things that can help you take your health and
fitness up a notch but
these three things are the foundation of fitness. Come talk to a coach if you need
help in any of
these three domains or if you want more information. We are here to help you get
there.
I'll see you in the dungeon my friends.

When and how did you first hear about Krav Maga?
I can't recall when I first heard about Krav Maga but I noticed KMSF a couple years
ago. I work
nearby and grew more curious each time I walked past. I wanted to do something other
than just run
but had become bored with the gym. I attended a couple trial classes, was immediately
hooked.
What's your favorite aspect of Krav Maga training?
I love that it feels like there's always something new. I never feel complacent,
even when revisiting
material I've been doing for a while.
How long have you been training for and what level have you reached?
I've been training at KMSF for a little over a year. I took and passed the orange
belt test in February.
What's your most memorable Krav Maga test or training story?
Toward the end of February's orange belt test, when we'd gone through all the groundwork
and
thought that we had finished, Barney got everyone's attention and said, "Okay...
get your
fight gear on." It seemed like everyone in the room took a collective deep breath
and let it out
slowly. Then we steeled ourselves and turned to get our gear at which point Barney
told us he
was messing with us and we were done.
What's your life like when you're not taking classes?
I'm a chemist at the Bay Area Air Quality Management District and I volunteer at
the California
Academy of Sciences, working with the Naturalist Center's specimen collections.
I run a lot,
read even more, and do what I can to help my seventeen-year-old, precocious, genius
daughter
become a responsible adult.
