Barny's Desk

From Barny's Desk
Experience is a hard teacher. She gives the test first and the lessons afterwards.
New Students come to Krav Maga with different mindsets. Two of them are most prevalent.
Learn as much as you can as fast as you can or become as proficient as possible
no matter
how long it takes. Neither method is perfect, there is a middle of the road approach
that is the
best in the earlier levels. Level one and two teach all the basics as well as how
to deal with
unarmed attacks and formulate good combinations. Level three is where technique
starts to play a bigger part in the training to get you ready to deal with armed
attackers.

Krav Maga is not a martial art and is not taught the same way a martial art is taught.
Krav Maga has no forms or katas that have to be executed precisely. If a student
rushes
through the first levels it makes the training in the upper levels much more difficult.
The lower levels create the foundation needed to learn the upper levels techniques.
Take
your time and build a strong foundation to take you through your upper level training.

A student needs to be respectful of himself, his teacher and the other students
in the class.
Be early, do what your teacher tells you, and always work your hardest. Do not push
to
advance to quickly so if you ever need to use what you learn you will know it instinctively
and you won't have to think about it.

CrossFit News

from Zac
Attention CrossFitters! Competition season is upon us. The 2012 Open (Sectionals)
begins
February 22nd and our team is in preparation mode. In the run up to the games we
will
be reviewing all of the Open workouts from 2011 every Saturday until the Open begins.
For
those of you who have competed, this will be a time to test yourself against your
past scores
and see how much you have improved. For the newer members of our team, you can get
a
taste of what competition workouts feel like and measure up against your peers.
Starting the
first weekend of February, we will implement the judging and standards typical of
competition
workouts. Now is also the time for you competitors to start doubling up on WODs
and tightening
up your diet. Remember, the purse for the Reebok CrossFit games is a MILLION dollars
this
year. That is some incentive to train hard! There is no better time than now to
tackle
your goals and fix the movements or skills that give you trouble. Grab one of the
coaches and
we will come up with a plan or progression to ramp you towards success. 2012? Let's
do this!
Cheers!
Coach Zac

Ken Brannan

When and how did you first hear about Krav Maga?
In late 2007, I moved to the area around USF, and began taking a bus
downtown each morning right down Bush Street. Just after the
intersection at Van Ness, I would briefly wonder what the little white
Krav Maga sign was for. Then I saw the Human Weapon episode featuring
Krav Maga, and it clicked.
How long have you been a member and what level have you reached?
Just before Christmas 2007, I was coming home late at night and was
accosted by some fairly large crack head that wanted my wallet. He
asked for my money, and after I politely declined, he began to engage.
Fortunately, my Muni bus came and the person went away. I was
clueless about how to protect myself, and quite frankly, was pretty
pissed off. My wife then bought me a 3-month membership at Krav to
get it out of my system. I have reached Level 3, and plan on taking
the Level 4 test this year.
What's your favorite aspect about training at KMSF?
There are three aspects of Krav that I really enjoy. First, the
training teaches us how to avoid having to defend ourselves by being
aware of situations that might precipitate the need to defend. Not
being a potential victim goes a long way toward not being an actual
victim. Second, if I must defend myself, I feel that I know enough
Krav at this point to put someone down. More importantly, I am keenly
aware that it is best for me not remain in a prolonged engagement
regardless of how much Krav I think I know. Third, I have met some
extremely decent people at Krav, and we learn from each other and have
fun doing it.
What's your favorite class and why?
My favorite area of study right now is the Level 3 curriculum. It's
the Krav equivalent of a box of chocolates, with flavors split between
self-defense, sparring, alley or stairwell training, and conditioning
work. Level 3 pieces together the separate elements of Levels 1 and
2, with new material, into a cohesive pathway toward a combined
knowledge base.
What's your most memorable training story?
I am not the biggest creature stalking this planet, and sometimes I
have a hard time breaking the Level 1 headlock from the side when a
larger partner bends down low on the headlock. One time, I could not
break a hold, so I simply took a bite out of the guy's leg. He let
go. Looking back, not only was his reaction humorous to me, but it
shined a spotlight on a key aspect of Krav: improvise and deliver
results no matter what you have to do.
What's your life like when you're not taking classes?
Professionally, I work for PG&E on the gas pipeline side of the
business, so it's been a very busy couple of years. I manage
engineering projects and contracts related to bringing natural gas
into PG&E's system from interstate pipelines, third-party gas storage,
and renewable gas projects. In short, I herd chickens for a living.
Personally, my hobbies right now are international travel and SCUBA
diving.
