Krav Maga has four basic principles.
First defend the attack, second control the attacker, third counter attack,
and forth get away safely.
All of the principles have a certain amount of technique. They are based on natural
instincts,
modified so that they really work. If a person chokes you it is natural to reach
and grab
their arms. The Krav Maga technique is to use a plucking motion, still reaching
except to
the center of our own throat. Controlling the attacker is in most cases less than
a half a
second. Placing your self in a position to stop another attack. Counter attacking
is the
hardest part of Krav Maga. It is learning where and how to strike and with the proper
weapon a punch, elbow, kick or knee and with maximum power and effect. Getting away
is the easy part, run to somewhere safe.
Anyone, no matter how small, can learn to defend them selves. It does take practice
to
learn the proper way to deliver powerful strikes. It requires moving your body
differently than anything else you have ever done. Getting as much of your body
weight
into every strike is the key.

CrossFit News
from KAT
Congratulations to Zac Hunter who recently completed his USAW Certification.
Olympic Weightlifting drives the power athlete, we are thrilled to have his skill
set as one
of the Crossfit KMSF coaches.
As our program continues to expand, we also very bitter-sweetly say goodbye to David
Bui and Marisea Rivera.
They are off to Tucson, where David will be attending to the University of Arizona
to pursue his Masters Degree
in Public Health. We are sad to say goodbye to them, but thrilled for what lies
ahead. David has been an integral
part of our Crossfit Team over the years. He is a fantastic athlete, and a fantastic
person, he will very much
be missed. Best of luck to you David and Marisea, we'll be rooting for you next
year in the Southwest Regionals.

When & How did you first hear about Krav Maga?
I first heard about Krav in the Chronicle a long time ago. Ironically what finally
got me training was a foot
injury from over 13 years in Aikido. Unlike Aikido where we train in bare feet on
a mat, in Krav
we wear shoes and have the mat. I found Krav was easier on my feet. Gradually my
foot got better and I was
able to begin cross training in Krav and Aikido.
What's your favorite aspect of Krav Maga training?
My favorite aspect is also my least favorite. Having to buy new clothes because
my old ones are too loose on me!
How long have you been training for and what level have you reached?
I am well into my 5th year now and my goal is to train consistently in Krav, Aikido
(at the San Francisco
Aikikai where I also teach occasionally), and private lesions in self defense that
I take weekly
from a San Quentin prison guard. I am not too focused on advancing levels since
my schedule is
limited to afternoon classes.
What's your most memorable Krav Maga test or training story?
My favorite was the few times that I taught my own hybrid AikiKrav techniques at
Krav. I have both styles in me,
so integrated them together... it was really fun.
What's your life like when you're not taking classes?
I am a husband, father to two kids, and have my own business.
