Barny's Desk

How you do anything is how you do everything.

I first heard this phrase when I attended a "Millionaire Mind Intensive" workshop
run by
T. Harv Eker, author of Secrets of a Millionaire Mind.
When you are training and you do something wrong do you get frustrated, laugh at
your self, or blame the instructor,
all the while thinking you are being picked on. If you answered yes to any of these
things you need to stop and
reconsider how you mentally approach learning. It is all about patterns. Realize
the opportunity is here to accomplish
the goal you have set for your self and put 100 per cent into it whether at work
or at play. One has to be excited,
motivated, inspired, enthusiastic, and optimistic in doing anything. Put a note
on your computer to remind you,
a post it on your bathroom mirror to start your day. How you do anything is how
you do everything.

A Home Away from Homelessness [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=rfujfecab&et=1104362196745&s=6563&e=001fAv5S5_x1szjc_0hGgWlfIEy5pmYD5Kd4zDIQ7KrdvHubFWNmPA4q5ik__Nh1P2xSWsRs67BwETuMHd7Pv7aJNmVNy_QGQc6PbyCxacbHNA=]

is a non-profit organization that offers three programs to benefit homeless Bay
Area youth. Each program is designed with the premise that education is the most
effective strategy for breaking the cycle of homelessness and reducing poverty.

The School House program gives the kids one-on-one tutoring and case management.
The kids also help cook dinner every evening for a communal dining experience.
They have a "home" to go to everyday after school, a place where they can keep their
favorite possessions, do their homework, make friends and have a sense of family
and community.

The Beach House program, located in the Marin Headlands, gives children a place
to go where they can just be kids.

Our Youth Leadership program helps kids make it through high school and into college.
It was born out of the vision of students who had graduated from the School House
and wanted a program for older teens to help them maintain their academic, social
and emotional gains.

Today the ability of non-profits like ours to provide children with a safe haven
- and the educational and life skills required to succeed - is gravely threatened.
But there is something those of us who have been more fortunate can do to help.
I am writing in hopes that you will become a sponsor of our Anniversary Celebration,
scheduled for April 28, 2011 at Terra in San Francisco.

This year our theme - Home Away: "Reaching for the Stars" - is built around an Oscar-style
presentation designed to acknowledge and celebrate the amazing accomplishments of
the children in our program.

With the New Year fundraising season underway, I know that you will receive many
such requests from nonprofit agencies and I appreciate the difficult decisions
you face in deciding which causes to support. There are compelling reasons why Home
Away deserves your help. Few programs give children the focused attention we do,
and every dollar you donate stays right here in Bay Area. With your help, I know
we can change the lives of many more children.

When and how did you first hear about Krav Maga?

In the late 90s I took a self-defense seminar with BAMM (Bay Area Model Mugging,
now Impact Bay Area) but
felt like I needed more. So I think I first heard about Krav in the early 2000s,
through various sources. I still hesitated
for a while, since the website of the national KM association looked so paramilitary
back then, and I don't really
have good memories from obligatory service in Germany. But I kept observing, and
things changed:

How long have you been a member and what level have you reached?

I joined over seven years ago, in July 2003, when the school had just moved to Bush
Street -- it was easy enough to
reach that I didn't have distance as an excuse anymore. (It had also started a pretty
funny ad campaign). Calling for
the first time, I expected some burly Captain Commando's voice to answer the phone,
but no, it was kind and
friendly Gail, and that helped. It still took a few months to get used to it all,
but after so many years I now feel
like having become part of the furniture. Alas, there's not many of the old guard
left...
Two years ago I survived the Blue Belt test; Barney said he was "shocked" :) (after
all, I failed the Orange Belt
test once). For both Green and Blue I'd like to thank world's best test buddy Dennis;
he claims I did it all myself,
but he believed in me more than I did. I still feel like the weakest Blue Belt of
the school, but hey, I'll just
keep to it. Unluckily, for the past 2 years or so I've had shoulder and back problems
(healing slows down with age...)
and I could only watch my buddies move on to the next level, become instructors...
still, it's encouraging to see
in them what's possible.

What's your favorite aspect about training at KMSF?

One thing I know about myself: If i don't find enough fun in something, I'll never
stick to it. So... I don't really
know why I keep coming back, since it's mostly things I hate -- sweating, fear,
exhaustion, touching wet screaming
strangers, being generally messy and uncivil. But then, everybody tells me that
same thing too. In a way, that
makes for good social life....
In particular, I'm grateful for the "one-stop" combination of everything we have
at our center here in SF, and really
glad i don't have to work out like a robot in a gym (everytime I walk past one,
I feel sorry for them...). Instead,
I'm learning something useful about things we usually avoid or try to look away
from. I'm confronting myself;
I've curbed unhealthy habits for good, with ease, and enjoy being guessed younger.
:)
Personal progress is interesting too, and kind of similar to design school -- in
the first years you have separate classes
for drawing, photography, lettering, color etc., and later you get to combine those
skills into a whole, for a poster,
book, website or entire campaign. Or in Krav terms, the weapons defenses, and multiple
attackers.
The more you learn, the more you discover all that's still left to learn... you
have to climb on top of the first hill to be
able to see the whole sierra of mountains behind it. That kind of sobering wisdom
might be why in the upper levels you
won't find too many high-volatility badass fighting machines, but fairly reasonable
mature folks (with, um, a few
goofy exceptions, right?)....

What's your favorite class and why?

Oh that's a tough call. Perhaps the KO bag class, it's such a social event... Aside
from that, my main focus has always
been the core KM technique classes, where I get the highest learning effect on top
of the exercise. I mostly do classes
that may bring me closer to the next belt, but visiting the other levels always
teaches me how much I've already
forgotten, and it feels good to help others with a little advice. The bottom line
is, I always walk home happiest when
I've had a good fun partner and a diverse, entertaining class of whatever kind.
I miss Chinese Boxing. If Krav is like metal rock, Chinese Boxing feels more jazzy-funky,
smart and organic, and I
occasionally try to use some elements in sparring, touching-shoulders etc. -- I
liked sparring in the beginning long ago,
but grew rather wary after a few encounters that weren't quite along the rules,
opponents who didn't realize their
strength, or just madly barreled on. But ok, I'm not without sin either, and have
clear weaknesses, so I hope to get
better in the next months. It's like going to the dentist -- it's necessary on a
regular basis but it often hurts. :)

What's your most memorable training story?

Several years ago we had an entire groupski of Russians at the school -- very kind
and friendly fellers between
classes, but no-nonsense on the mat. As fate would eventually have it, one day I
ended up partnered with their
largest representative (species Ursus maior), and it was ground fighting time. No
point trying to remember how I
got underneath him; pretty much anybody would have. Once there, of course there
was no way to get him off me,
and no air wanted to enter my lungs either... it was time to say goodbye to the
world, and the events of my life began
passing before my inner eye. Luckily, as I watched my childhood go by, I remembered
the last-ditch exit of the
underdog: I just tickled him and hoped it'd work. He squeaked with surprise, and
within approx. 1.73 seconds I was on
top. He took it with good humor. What do we learn from that? 1) Never give up, and
2) in Krav, anything goes.

What's your life like when you're not taking classes?

I'm a self-employed graphic designer, specializing in typefaces, information design,
branding and mascot creation.
That may sound like a hodgepodge but it's all quite related -- I should rather say
I create small simple things with
meaning. Don't ask me whether I'm web or print, that's superficial. The only thing
that matters is the human eye.
My website is www.kamedesign.com. My last and probably biggest project ever was
the SoMA typeface system
for Sony Ericsson's new smartphones, with almost 20,000 glyphs drawn single-handedly
in one year, covering
oodles of languages and functions. Btw, the black KMSF tees and sweats with the
action-style lettering in white
and red are of my hand, including the typeface -- hope you like them.
For the past 3 years, I played drums with Neko Punch, an '80s-style J-pop band.
We dissolved a while ago since
two members had a baby together, but brought out a CD before that. Find us at MySpace,
Facebook or iTunes --
actually, you may have heard our music already in Muay Thai class.
My biggest field of interest in many ways is Japan; I've traveled there 15 times,
speak and read the language to a
fair degree, started creating typefaces and generally love the mix of serene old
and bouncy new culture, music and
design -- so evidently, I'd love to live there, but haven't found an entryway in
regards of work there (no teaching
English please...). An ongoing hobby are the "PechaKucha Nights" which also originated
there, a very entertaining
form of "speed-lecturing" on art, design and other cool subjects: I've presented
9 times in SF, Vegas and Tokyo,
and my stuff is usually rather wacky, about duct tape, traffic cones and such: http://www.kamedesign.com/ePecha.html.
